Welcome to Holt
Our Community
Holt is a small village situated in North East Wales, part of the Welsh Marches, and sits on the banks of the River Dee. The Dee at this point marks the boundary between Wales and England and Holt Bridge was an important border crossing for centuries.
In 1282 Holt (also known as Villa Leonis or Lyons) was founded as an English town when lands were granted to John de Warrenne who built Holt Castle. Historically, it has 5 key elements – remains of a castle, a medieval stone Bridge across the Dee to England, St Chad’s Church built in the late 13th century, a Roman Tile works from the 1st Century AD and an involvement in the Civil War of 1642- to 1646.
Today the village is a delightful place to live with a thriving community, an excellent primary school, with a wide range of businesses and services. Holt has featured on the routes of major events such as marathons, the 2014 and 2019 Tour of Britain cycle races plus our annual Scarecrow Trail. There are a wide range of active clubs and societies and is well placed for visitors to Chester and North Wales.
