1st Holt Brownies

Who are we?

We are part of Girlguiding UK a charitable organisation dedicated to providing opportunities for all girls who want to join. The current 1st Holt Brownie Pack was registered in 1977 and prides itself in providing local girls with the chance to 'Go Girlguiding'.

We aim to provide fun, friendship and a chance to learn valuable life, social and practical skills through a variety of games/activities. Central to everything we do is the promise we make: -I promise that I will do my best:
To love my God,
To serve my Queen and my country,
To help other people
And
To keep the Brownie Guide LawThe Brownie Guide Law is:
A Brownie Guide thinks of others before herself and does a Good Turn every day.A Sixer helps a new Brownie make her promise.

What do we do

We follow the new Brownie Adventure programme launched in 2003 by Girlguiding UK. This focuses on three main areas, our community, the world we live in and ourselves. There are two handbooks to accompany the programme giving girls lots of exciting things to do at home 'Brownie Adventure' for 7 to 8 year olds and 'Adventure On' for 9 to 11 year olds.

We work towards Brownie Badges as a pack completing specified activities (refer to the Brownie Badge Book for more information). In 2004 we worked for Seasons, Craft and Brownie Traditions badges. It is also possible to work towards special interest badges by achieving a certain standard in hobbies/interests you undertake outside Brownies e.g. Swimming.

A typical Brownie Meeting

What did we do in 2004?

We started our year by attending a special pantomime performance at the Pavilion Theatre, Rhyl just for Girlguiding Clywd (a very noisy night). We then moved out of our normal meeting place to allow extensive renovations to take place. 1st Farndon Scouts in the next village kindly allowed us the use of their hut. In June we went to a Campfire Evening organised by Wrexham Maelor District at Bangor-On-Dee comprising of singsong, hot dogs and comedy sketches. We held a special sponsored Children's Marathon Challenge night where each Brownie had to complete 26 mini challenges including obstacle races, mad measuring and cake decorating. We invited 1st Holt Rainbows to join in too and the money raised was divided equally between pack funds and 'Children with Leukaemia'. In November we took part in a Remembrance Day Service, laying a wreath and poppy crosses at the War Memorial in Holt to remember those who died serving their country.

We joined other packs in Wrexham Division to celebrate Brownies 90th year at a disco at Plas Madoc in July. In December we joined Brownies from all over the county in a Big Brownie 90th Birthday Sleepover at Pontins, Prestatyn.

Who can join us?

We are open to all girls aged 7 to 11 years. We operate a waiting list when we are fully subscribed and follow Girlguiding UK rules in its administration. Priority is given to girls from 1st Holt Rainbows, Brownies who move into the area having made their promise elsewhere and girls that live in the District of Holt. However we are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and welcome applications from any girls interested in becoming a Brownie, including those with a disability.

Where do we meet?

Due to the generosity of Holt Presbyterian Chapel we meet in Holt Presbyterian Chapel Hall, Castle Street, Holt from 6.00pm - 7.15pm every Thursday evening during school term time. Please note that our meeting place has full disabled access and facilities.

How much does it cost?

Nothing to try out Brownies for the first 6 to 8 weeks. Once you are enrolled, as a full member a termly subscription of £10 is due. We provide each Brownie with a promise box, handbook and pack badges. Brownies only pay to replace any lost or damaged items; additional charges may be made to cover the cost of optional trips outside the unit.

We expect Brownies to purchase their own uniform for enrolment (the cost of trousers, t-shirt and sash is approx £25). There are a variety of uniform choices, the Girlguiding UK website gives full details and the chance to shop online if desired. There is also a Wrexham Girlguiding HQ Shop (opposite Wrexham Station) open from 10 to 12 every Saturday during school term time.
